Hey, everybody!
I don't know if this has been mentioned by anyone yet, but there is another nice feature on Big O in the "Fall Edition 2004, Volume 6" issue of "AnimePlay."
The issue's cover art features a dog and cyborg from the Ghost in the Shell 2 movie.
The Big O II article is an interview with the director Kazuyoshi Katayama. It provides some interesting insight into the creation of the show - including the season 2.
Here are some highlights, in case you don't want to spend $10 on the magazine.
-Katayama notes that Evangelion was the "final robot anime" - and that Big O came as an idea of a mecha story with a completely different spin, to avoid the mass of copycats.
-He has some interesting thoughts on giant robots - like they shouldn't be able to hold guns, which makes them too much like human.
-The minimalistic style of Big O was done as a way to avoid the "pretty animation style." (And this was duly noted to be influenced by the Batman: The Animated Series on in the 90's in America - Katayama actually hoped it wouldn't be taken in a bad response by American audiences.)
-Dorothy - inspired by Winona Ryder in BEETLEJUICE - was a sort of "antithesis" to the "pretty girl" anime. Katayama goes on to describe how they tried to make her appear more like an android than a human - as well as some interesting comments about shows with fan service. Very interesting!
Anywho, it's a nice 5-page interivew (with plenty of season 2 shots on about half the space). Check it out!
Like I mentioned, ten bucks is a little high for a magazine. But it does include a DVD with some interviews, convention footage, and previews. Other articles in this issue include Ghost in the Shell 2 movie; Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, artist Pat Lee of Transformers comic book fame, a 2-page preview article on Fullmetal Alchemist, and a short interview with Voice Actor (and script adapter) Crispen Freeman (Alan of Big O, Tsume of Wolf's Rain, Alex of Last Exile, and more!).
